Review

I'm back reviewing for fellow Story origin authors.

I've just enjoyed:

The Prince and Dai
by Gloria Oliver

'The Prince and Dai' is a pleasant easy read, a simple story simply told. Dai and her friend Jaques make a discovery during a thunderstorm. The story makes a useful addition to the Daiyu Wu mystery series revealing more about Dai and her friend Jacques.

The baby fur seals are back and living on the safe rocks whilst their mums go fishing. The water in the cove is too shallow to let sharks, orca, or dolphins get close. Even leopard seals have a problem hunting the babies here. There's a safe enclosed pool behind their rocks where they can cool off. It's been a sizzling summer so I've been in the sea too or under a shady tree with a book. Thank goodness there are some good books available.Check them out.

AGAIN BEWARE, WATCH the deadlines! Most of the books are free and I hope you'll find a few to enjoy.

G.J. Berger, best selling and prize winning historical fiction author, and my colleague in Writer's Choice (that's our writers' historical fiction publishing co-operative) is skiting away about the success of his mother's memoir, 'To Steal a Moment's Time'. It's been hitting the best seller lists. His mother was Katharina Berger, a most sought-after stage and film actress in Germany at the outbreak of WWII. I can genuinely recommend it as a fascinating read.

'To Steal a Moment's Time'

AND

Another book I've just enjoyed is an Australian historical novel set during the 1930s and 1940s.

Called 'Limberlost' by Robbie Arnott it's a gentle, thoughtful read. Alas it is expensive but cheapest at Kobo.com

Dodge the shocking weather, keep warm and enjoy a good book.

ALREADY A BEST SELLER

G.J. Berger, best selling and prize winning historical fiction author, and my colleague in Writer's Choice (that's our writers' historical fiction publishing co-operative) has just put together his mother's memoir, 'To Steal a Moment's Time'. I'm reading it to review for him. It's stunning.

Blurb:

On the brink of World War II, Katharina Berger was the most sought-after stage and film actress in Germany. As many of her colleagues fled Hitler’s madness and the devastation of war, Katharina stayed and gave birth to a healthy baby boy in 1944. From evading Nazi fanatics and helping Jews escape, to scrounging for food and shelter as she searched for her missing husband, she journaled during her son’s first year of life, surviving on the small thread of hope that she and her child might live to see a better world.

'To Steal a Moment's Time'

Still not released (Feb 8th)  but already this memoir has been listed in multiple Amazon Top 100 lists. It has reached as high as 22 in Theatre Biographies, no. 71 in Survival Biographies, and no. 69 in Historical German Biographies. These rankings change by the hour, but it's a great start, especially since readers have to wait a while to actually get the book.

AND

A couple of you have asked me what I'm reading.

Today's book is the hilarious 'Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows' by Balli Kaur Jaswal

Born and brought up in London, young Nikki is trying to avoid strict Sikh traditions without losing her culture, and trying to find out where she belongs. The widows she is employed by the Temple to teach English, but they have an awful lot to teach her!

Gardening is so satisfying. From setting the seeds to planting out, I've had a grand day. I'd had to remove cloches, and wrap the tender plants - tomatoes, aubergines, peppers and French beans in plastic protectors - see the photo above! - I do enjoy my home grown vegetables. November now is a changeable month - bloomin' climate change - and we'll have hot days and next week, snow! I was driven inside to write this newsletter by a whopping thunderstorm and hail.

Gardening aside I've found some excellent reads this month, more authors you might like and the Vikings are back. As usual there are several mixed bags of books on offer. The books are mostly free and there might be a few you'd enjoy.

No deadlines this month, the offers are all for November.

How I miss the Japanese sense of service. My café order of tea during the time of hydrangea and iris blooming was served in iris decorated cups with a hydrangea blossom. And I'd sit and contemplate the blossoms. It's a lovely, serene and mind soothing  occasion. Could certainly use some similar occasions as I'm rushing to finish the Japanese Edo period novella amidst government upheaval, Christmas family upheavals and local climate change problems.

This month I've found an author of straight, serious historicals you might enjoy and do give the last three mixed genre offers a glance. The books are mostly free and there might be a few you'd enjoy.

As always watch the deadlines and don't miss out!
